Routine oral exams are the best way for patients to avoid infection, disease and decay. Regular at-home care is important to maintain healthy gums and teeth, but oral exams allow us to inspect your mouth more thoroughly, so we can detect any signs of dental issues that may become a larger problem down the road. Some of these issues may not display obvious signs or symptoms in their earliest stages, so we recommend that patients come in for an oral exam at least twice a year.
Oral Cancer Screening
Either as part of a routine oral exam or on its own, we recommend that patients have an oral cancer screening regularly. If detected and treated early, the survival rate for those diagnosed with oral cancer can be 80-90 percent. Oral cancer screening is a quick, painless procedure that can be vital for your overall health. We advise at least one screening per year for patients who do not use tobacco products, and at least two screenings annually for patients who do use tobacco products.
Family Dental Care/Pediatric Dentistry
Our gentle and friendly administrative professionals at Dental Professionals of Fair Lawn work hard to make your child’s visit to the dentist as comfortable and relaxing as possible. With regular exams and cleanings, as well as a wide variety of preventive care treatments, we can help your children develop good habits and maintain healthy teeth and gums for years to come!
In addition to routine oral exams, dental cleanings are an integral part of maintaining good oral hygiene. Dental cleanings are also an excellent opportunity for you to learn more about the state of your oral health. This time allows you and your dentist to discuss ways you can adjust your at-home care so you can improve the health of your gums and teeth. We recommend for patients to have at least two dental cleanings every year. They can even be part of your routine oral exam.

Fluoride isn’t just for children – at Dental Professionals of Fair Lawn, we offer fluoride treatments for adults as well. These treatments can help you maintain good oral hygiene through greater prevention of tooth decay. We often recommend a fluoride treatment after completion of a regular dental cleaning.
Due to the contour of your back teeth, bacteria can often get into small crevices and lead to tooth decay. Sealants are a great way to protect against these threats to your oral health. Dental sealants are made of a strong, long-lasting plastic material, and are placed over the surface of your molars so they are strengthened and protected. This procedure is often highly recommended for children as a defense against cavities.
Your safety is very important to us, so we take great care to keep a high level of cleanliness and sterilization throughout our office. We use disposable tools and equipment when possible, and our reusable materials are thoroughly disinfected before each treatment. Our staff uses gloves and masks when working with patients, and all countertops and surfaces are regularly cleaned. Again, your safety is our top priority – that’s why we implement high infection control standards and offer each and every patient a clean and sterile environment.
Endodontics/Root Canal Therapy
If you are experiencing extreme sensitivity to hot and cold, and/or feel pain in one or more of your teeth, you may have an infection that needs immediate treatment. An infected tooth can also sometimes lead to a dental abscess forming in the area. If left untreated, an infected tooth or abscess can lead to tooth loss and can potentially cause more serious overall health issues – it can even be a life-threatening condition. Endodontic therapy, also known as root canal therapy, is designed to clean the infection out of the tooth and the gum pocket. The procedure removes the pulp and sterilizes the nerve chamber. Then, a porcelain crown is affixed to the treated tooth to provide extra strength and durability, as well as an improved appearance. At Dental Professionals of Fair Lawn, we use air-driven rotary endodontic equipment so that the procedure is performed more quickly and patient discomfort is minimized.
Contact us today to schedule an appointment if you are experiencing any sensitivity or pain in your teeth and gums.
We provide all our patients with a 24-hour emergency phone number in cases of dental emergencies such as extreme pain, tooth looseness, traumatic injury, or other factors. In these situations, we can make arrangements to see our patients as quickly as possible. If you feel you are experiencing a dental emergency, please call 201-972-6555.
Scaling and Root Planing
When gum disease progresses, it may be necessary to restore your periodontal health through scaling and root planing. Using specialized tools, our dentists are able to carefully remove any plaque and bacterial buildup below the gumline non-surgically. Once a deep cleaning has been completed, root planing will smooth the roots of your teeth, making it difficult for bacteria to become attached. The gums can be sealed afterward using an advanced laser, promoting faster healing and helping to reduce discomfort.
Following dental procedures that use a local anesthetic, many of our patients dislike the feeling of numbness that stays with them long after the procedure. With OraVerse®, our patients are now able to recover from the feeling of numbness in half the time. If used, OraVerse® will be administered immediately following your procedure, allowing you to to talk, eat, and smile much faster after the initial treatment.
In an effort to protect our environment and offer greater convenience to our patients, we use digital x-rays, computer imagery, and digitized patient records. This helps to cut down on paper waste, and eliminates the use of certain environmentally harmful chemicals associated with developing traditional photos. Plus, our digital x-ray technology significantly reduces patient exposure to radiation, and provides near-instantaneous images that can often be sent electronically to your insurance provider.
Mercury Free Dentistry
In the past, amalgam was the most commonly used material when creating fillings for patients. However, these fillings contain a small amount of mercury – a material that has potential health risks – and often resulted in a metallic appearance to the teeth. At Dental Professionals of Fair Lawn, we use tooth-colored fillings as a safer and more attractive alternative to amalgam fillings. These fillings are made of a durable composite resin that looks more like your natural tooth color. This material is long-lasting, strong, and discreet!
