Orthodontics

The benefits of orthodontic treatment go beyond straightening your teeth for aesthetic purposes. Untreated orthodontic issues can often lead to other health problems later on, such as stress on jaw joints, excess or uneven wear on teeth, inability to properly chew food, and more. These issues can also occasionally cause chronic headaches and neck pain. Additionally, straighter teeth can help improve your overall dental health. Crooked and crowded teeth can make daily brushing and flossing difficult, leading to poor oral hygiene. This means an increased risk of periodontal disease (gum disease). With proper orthodontic treatment at Dental Professionals of Fair Lawn, our orthodontist, Dr. Anna Bonaiuto, and our experienced dental team can help you avoid future health issues, as well as unveil a beautiful new smile! Below are some of the ways we can help.

Adult Orthodontics

You are never too old for orthodontic treatment. Many of our patients require orthodontic treatment as adults because they were never able to have the issues resolved when they were younger. We also often see patients who have had orthodontic treatment earlier in life, but did not receive proper maintenance instructions after their braces were removed. There are a number of other reasons for adult orthodontics, as well. Many patients may be reluctant to have wire braces as an adult, so we have carefully selected some of the most effective treatment options that also offer the best possible cosmetic appearance during treatment. With advances in orthodontics, you can straighten your teeth more comfortably, and more discreetly, than ever before.

Child Orthodontics

Children all develop at different rates, but it has been recommended by the American Dental Association and the American Orthodontic Association that children have an orthodontic assessment around the time they are seven years old. For most children, the first permanent molars and incisors have usually erupted by age seven. This allows us to check for opportunities for early treatment. If treatment is not necessary at the time of the consultation, we can use this time to determine when it might be appropriate to begin treatment (if needed). Starting early treatment can help young patients avoid developing jaw problems and various other developmental issues, since it allows us to monitor and properly guide growth of the jaws and teeth. Invisalign®

With custom-designed, clear aligning trays, Invisalign® offers a discreet option for patients who are straightening their teeth. Many teenagers and adults prefer Invisalign® over traditional braces, because it allows them to straighten their teeth without drastically changing their appearance during treatment. The aligners are also removable for additional convenience.

Six Month Smiles®/Rapid Braces

For many of our adult patients, Six Month Smiles® offers a unique advantage for orthodontic treatment. Using clear brackets and white or tooth-colored wires, these braces are less noticeable than traditional metal braces. This method also uses less force, remarkably leading to faster tooth movement. This technique is usually not recommended for teenagers and children, because it does not address orthodontic issues as extensively as other treatments. However, Six Month Smiles® can quickly and discreetly provide our adult patients with a more attractive smile, conveniently straightening crooked teeth and closing any gaps.

Damon System

The Damon System uses a self-ligating bracket system. This means each bracket has its own “door” that can be opened and secured to hold down the wire. This eliminates the need for the elastic bands that are used to hold down the wire on traditional brackets. Without elastic bands, the wire is able to move more easily and freely with less friction. The removal of bands also makes it easier to clean around the brackets. Dr. Bonaiuto is experienced and knowledgeable in this particular orthodontic technique. With Damon Braces, treatment is typically more efficient, hygienic, and comfortable than traditional treatment.
